Joanna Brown ranked 7th in the World heading into Olympic Year
Joanna Brown of Ottawa is currently Canada’s top ranked Olympic distance triathlete -- which involves a 1,500m Swim, 40km bike and 10k run. Brown and the rest of the world’s top Olympic distance triathletes compete primarily on the World Triathlon Series (WTS) where most of the races are Olympic distance and a few are ‘Sprints’ which are half the distance in each discipline.
Brown has had a few podiums at World Cup ‘Sprint’ events but her best results are definitely at the Olympic distance -- and on the tougher courses, like her recent 3rd place performance at the WTS event in Bermuda April of 2019.
"Since competing on the international stage as a Junior, mastering the Olympic distance has always been at the forefront of my mind" says Brown. "I have always loved the thought that triathlon is a sport that is mastered over time, and becoming a prominent Olympic distance racer requires years to accumulate fitness and experience.
A powerful cyclist and one of the top-5 runners on the WTS circuit, Joanna is focused on more WTS podiums and building steadily towards Tokyo 2020. "I think the longer event suits me as I can really show my fitness in a 2 hour event and I enjoy the small battles that are won throughout the race to get you to the finish line first."
Another Top- 5 performance this year by Brown in the ITU Tokyo World Test Event in or WTS Grand Final in Lausanne Switzerland, both in August, will secure a spot for Canada at the Tokyo Olympics.
